Welcome:
The second quarter has gone and gone and we are onto the second half of the school year! The third quarter is when we discuss the process of industrialization in America and this week's video fits perfectly with our theme because it uses steam to talk about effort. The video we watched on Friday is called "212 The Extra Degree" from Simple Truths.
This Past Week:
- Lyddie: We spent some time watching an incredibly cheesy, yet highly informational movie about the early industrialization in the United States. While laughing at the movie, the students can uncover what working conditions were like in early textile mills and some of the motivations that drove young women to work in the early 1800s.
- Industrialization & Urbanization Drawing: We also spent a good deal of time creating and changing villages in the 1800s. The students were asked to draw their own version of a typical village in the early 1800s. We then made a series of additions and changes to their villages that mirrored the urbanization and industrialization in the 1800s. As the students drew we discussed things like canals, water wheels, early textile mills, and the advent of the steam engine.
- Google Classroom Updates:
- 2nd Chance Learning Form: As we move into the third quarter I am going to make the students start to use my Second Chance Learning Form on the Google Classroom whenever they submit work past its due date or resubmit an assignment. While I do not believe in taking points off for work turned in late, I do believe there needs to be some consequences and an opportunity for reflection by the student and this form will do just that. Additionally, the students will need to include the email address of a parent/guardian whenever they submit work past the due date so you too will be up to date on their progress.
- Daily Presentations: As a reminder, I rely on Google Slides to keep myself and my class organized and the links are on the Google Classroom and here. In general, the first set of slides are what we do in my periods 1, 5, and 6 classes while the second set of slides in each deck are my periods 3 and 8.
Next Week:
- Industrialization & Urbanization Drawing: We'll continue with the Industrialization Drawings next week in class and look into the beginning of the modern American city. The students will complete the drawings in the middle of the week and then do some reflection questions about the assignment when we're finished.
- Lyddie: We will finish watching Lyddie and answering the discussions this week so the students get a firm understanding of what life was like for those working in the mills in the 1800s.
- Child Labor Stations: Later in the week the students will begin investigating the use of children as laborers in the American workforce in the 1800s and early -1900s by analyzing a series of primary and secondary sources through some station work that will spill into next week.
- Content Check-in: The students will also take the first content check-in of the quarter on Friday. The check-in will be worth 10 points and is based on the information in this Quizlet that is available to them on the Google Classroom.
