Week Six: October 2-6

Welcome

Social Studies (Periods 1, 5 and 6):

This Past Week:

  • Monday: Today was all about helping the students prepare for the mastery check on Wednesday. We started by playing a Blooket to review for the check-in. The students then created a thin slide to help them remember the correct answer to the question they missed the most. Finally, we did a Pear Deck Flashcard Factory for the 5 most commonly missed answers from the Blooket to help them review just a little more.
  • Tuesday: We spent today investigating the Declaration of Independence. The students were given time to work in collaborative groups to help create presentations meant to help us better understand the goals and guiding beliefs of the Declaration of Independence.
  • Wednesday: The students took our first content check of the year today and also worked on finishing up their "Iron Chef" presentations to help them better understand the principles behind our Declaration of Independence and the formation of the United States.
  • Thursday: Today the students created their first infographic of the year when we completed the Declaration by the Numbers activity. Infographics are a great way to incorporate numbers, images, and text to tell the story of an event.
  • Friday: The students watched part of America the Story of Us and completed a sheet that's meant to help them practice supporting claims with evidence today.

Next Week:

I'm very excited about this upcoming week because we will be starting our first learning menu of the year. To this point in the school year, we have been doing everything as a class or in small groups--but now it's time to give the kids some freedom and choice. Here is the menu the students will be working on for the next couple of weeks.

Accelerated Social Studies (Periods 3 and 8):

This Past Week:

  • Monday: The students did a Numbermania activity today. The goal of the assignment was to have the students build collaborative knowledge of a key event from the Revolutionary Period and then use that to design and create an infographic. Check out the work that the students did here.
  • Tuesday: We spent today investigating the Articles of Confederation. After doing the mastery check #2 Blooket again today we turned our attention to the next topic--the first government of the US. The students worked in collaborative groups to create small presentations about the Articles of Confederation that they will deliver in class tomorrow.
  • Wednesday: The students presented their Iron Chef presentations today in class after we discussed some things to do and to avoid when presenting--check out some of the tips the students gave each other, they're great (Period 3 Tips, Period 8 Tips)
  • Thursday: Today was all about ensuring the students understood the concepts on Friday's content check. The students did a Pear Deck Flash Card Factory assignment on the 7 most commonly missed questions from the Blooket we used throughout the week. Flashcard Factory is a great way to get the students thinking about content in a different way, working together and even laughing at the end.
  • Friday: The students took our second content check of the year today and then we dove into the way our government works by researching the three branches of government. Check out the link below to see what the students did today and will be working on next week.

Next Week:

This upcoming week will be all about the Constitution and how the government of the United States actually operates. We'll be spending some time each day doing some quick content bursts to help the students understand the ideas behind the Constitution and then working on the assignments embedded within #031-Three Branches Mastery Grid.

Week Nine: Friday, October 28, 2022

Welcome:  Nine weeks down! I can't believe that we are already at the end of the first quarter and that the students will be taking their Civics Exam on Friday! This past week we were able to watch a great video from Goalcast that talks about the wisdom of a third grade drop out and asks the students "how ya living?" The video is a longer one (almost 10 minutes) but is well-worth the time to watch and I pick up new things each time I watch it. I hope you enjoy!  Social Studies (Periods 1, 4 & 5)  This Past Week: Tuesday:  The students did an activity called Iron Chef today. They worked in groups of 4 to create a presentation about 4 amendments in the Bill of Rights and then presented before leaving class. Check out some of the slides they were able to create here.  Wednesday:  We started to look at some of the responsibilities American citizens have today by discussing the process by which we elect our presidents. After playing a bit of a review game fo...

Week Three: Friday, September 13, 2034

Welcome:  This week, we had the privilege of watching a video titled "Dear High School Self," created by a former student. This heartfelt message serves as a poignant reminder for our students to cherish their time in school, as it passes quickly. Many students found it relatable and impactful, highlighting the importance of reflection during their formative years.   This Past Week: Monday: I was out today for a few doctor's appointments and the students worked on a Wizer activity meant to help them differentiate between primary and secondary sources and recognize bias. The guest teacher had nothing but great things to say about the students!  Tuesday:  Today was the final day for the students to work on their Unit One Timelines (#10 on the Google Classroom). It was great to hear the students discussing the different ways to go about finding the information for the timeline. One student said, "ohhh, it's like a game and you have to put together the clues."  ...

Week Eight: October 14-18, 2024

Welcome:  Just like that, we are into the middle of October and more than halfway done the first quarter! The students started the annual fundraiser this past week and went wild over rubber ducks and possible trips to Citizens Bank Park. Next week marks the beginning of the Make a Difference Day collection--the students will be collecting canned goods, paper products, and personal hygiene products to donate to the Coventry Food Pantry to support local families.  I've been listening to a lot of Ryan Holiday and his Daily Stoic podcast lately and he has been on a moment mori kick. Momento mori  is the idea that everything must die, it although it sounds morbid, is a great reminder for us to live our lives to the fullest. This reminded me of one of my favorite clips from the movie Dead Poets Society-- we didn't have time to watch it on Friday so we'll start the week with it on Monday.  This Past Week:  Three Branches Mastery Grid: The students spent most of the wee...
