 Welcome:

Another week down and some more resources shared with the students for high school! The students watched the two videos found below to help them make course selections for the high school on Friday. All course selections are due by January 30 and the counselors will be in our class on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, to help with the students. Here is a rising 9th-grade "to-do" list and a checklist from the high school guidance department to help with the process.

This Past Week in Social Studies (1, 4, and 5):

Here's a quick rundown of what we did each day in class this past week:
  • Monday: No school today
  • Tuesday: The students worked on a challenging assignment called #040-Wars for the West List/Group/Label today. The students were given a list of 32 terms that we have worked with over the past few days and were asked to create groupings of 3-5 terms that are connected and then explain their connections.
  • Wednesday: The students started the day with an activity called "Word Up Wednesday." This activity helped us to better understand some of the massacres that took place in the American west in the 1800s as our nation expanded. The students were then given the remaining time to work on #040.
  • Thursday: The students did a quick Pear Deck presentation to help plan out our class discussions next week. Finally, the students spent time working on their #040-Wars for the West List/Group/Label assignment.
  • Friday: We spent the entire day today watching the course selection videos listed above and making course selections for next year.

Next Week in Social Studies (1, 4, and 5):

The students will be taking the next round of their LinkIt assessments on Monday and Tuesday so we will have shortened class periods, in addition, the high school guidance counselors will be coming to our classes on Wednesday to help the students with their course selections. Here's a list of what we will be doing throughout the week next week:
  • We will do a Wingman Discussion activity this week where the students will discuss and debate the question "Should the United States pay reparations to Native American tribes?" We'll spend some time planning and researching for the discussions first.
  • Industrial Revolution Chat Stations: The students will be introduced to the content of the third quarter through a low-pressure activity called "Chat Stations." They will be introduced to some bigger questions about technology and human life in this activity.
  • Industrial Revolution Group Frayer: The students will start with the third quarter content by completing an assignment called the Industrial Revolution Group Frayer. They will be asked to become an expert on 5 different terms in order to help build a collaborative base of knowledge.

Week 16: Decemberr 9, 2024

Welcome:  This week we welcome the students back from Thanksgiving break and to the month of December! It was a busy week in homeroom as we had a second-step lesson on Wednesday and clubs on Thursday. We've also been busy collecting items for Operation Giving Tree--donations will be accepted through December 11, so please think about helping if you can.  Social Studies (Periods 2, 6, 7 and 8):  This Past Week: #22-Trails West Google Doc: Most of the week was centered on this Google Doc. The students completed four parts to help them gain a better understanding of the lengths to which Americans went in order to survive and thrive in the West in the 19th century.  Part One:  This was a simple chart about the trails that went west that the students completed using content burst videos recorded by Miss Boyd (the Orange Team social studies teacher).  Part Two:  The students then answered a series of questions to help serve as guided research about life on ...

Week Seven: Friday Ocbtober 13, 2023

Welcome:  And just like that we are finished with the seventh week of school and halfway through October! This past week was a fun one as we celebrated homecoming with a Spirit Week that culminated with some fun in the gym at the end of the day on Friday. Don't forget that we have team spirit wear available and information about the Make a Difference Day food collection on our middle school website.   This week brought another Friday and another opportunity for an inspirational video. This week we watched a video of one of the most inspiring people I've ever seen--Inky Johnson. Inky talks all about belief and overcoming obstacles in this video.  Social Studies (Pd. 1, 5 and 6):  This Past Week:  Monday:  On Monday we finished the episode of America the Story of Us  that we were watching about the American Revolution. The students also picked topics for the Common Craft video portion of the American Revolution Menu and got into groups.  Tuesday: To...
