Week Six: Friday, October 7, 2022

 Welcome:

Six weeks down already, it's absolutely insane how quickly this first quarter is going! This week marked the beginning of the Make A Difference Day collection & the annual magazine drive for our students. Please think about supporting the North Coventry Food Pantry by donating goods for the collection and our school by purchasing goods from the fundraiser if you can.

Last Week:

This past week was all about the documents that helped shape our nation and the ideas behind them as we dove into the Declaration of Independence & the Constitution. Here's a quick rundown of the assignments the students completed in class:
  • ✅ #024-Friday, September 30, 2022: The students were given some time in class on Monday to finish up the assignment they worked on last week. The students were asked to turn excerpts of the preamble to the Declaration of Independence into either  "text messages" or "Instagram posts"
  • #025-Group Interest Form: This form was part of a video that the students watched from our Guidance department.
  • #026-Constitutional Convention Thick Slide: The students were asked to complete a "Thick Slide" assignment to help gain a better understanding of the Constitutional Convention and the goals of the meeting. We'll create these types of slides often throughout the year as they are a great way for students to organize their thoughts and demonstrate what they learn through quick research.
  • ✅ #027-Principles of the Constitution Thick Slide: We began our investigation of the ideas and guiding beliefs of our nation's founders with this Thick Slide assginment. The students were asked to choose one of the four principles of our Constitution and explain the meaning of it in their own words and add images to the slide to help their classmates understand the meaning.
  • ✅ #028-The Principles of the Constitution: The students started this assignment on Friday, October 7, and will most likely finish it up in class on Monday. Each student was given the choice to complete a Thin Slide or a Sketch & Tell for each of the four principles by using the work their classmates compiled yesterday.  I talked to the students about this last week and want to be sure you hear it from me--I am NOT expecting the students to finish up this assignment over the weekend unless they REALLY want to. I want the students to enjoy their weekends and time away from school--we can finish it this upcoming week.
*As a reminder, any assignment marked with a ✅ are graded assginments.

Next Week:

This week we'll dive even further into Constittuion when the students investigate the three branches of government. The students will be doing another mastery grid where they will work at their own pace this week. Throughout the weeks to come they will be asked to do the following:
  • Watch video lectures about each branch of government and take notes.
  • Complete a Google Form "quiz" that doesn't count as a grade, however, the students will need to score a 100% on the quiz to move forward. This ensures that they have all of the information and knowledge they need to be successful with the other assignments.
  • An assignment called "iPhones from the Past" to ensure the students understand the thoughts and ideas behind the Separation of Powers.
  • A sorting assginment meant to ensure the students know the powers and responsibitlities of each branch of goverment.
  • An infographic assignment in which the students are asked to create a visual aide to help their viewers better-understand the powers and requirements of each branch of government.

Week Nine: Friday, October 28, 2022

Welcome:  Nine weeks down! I can't believe that we are already at the end of the first quarter and that the students will be taking their Civics Exam on Friday! This past week we were able to watch a great video from Goalcast that talks about the wisdom of a third grade drop out and asks the students "how ya living?" The video is a longer one (almost 10 minutes) but is well-worth the time to watch and I pick up new things each time I watch it. I hope you enjoy!  Social Studies (Periods 1, 4 & 5)  This Past Week: Tuesday:  The students did an activity called Iron Chef today. They worked in groups of 4 to create a presentation about 4 amendments in the Bill of Rights and then presented before leaving class. Check out some of the slides they were able to create here.  Wednesday:  We started to look at some of the responsibilities American citizens have today by discussing the process by which we elect our presidents. After playing a bit of a review game fo...

Week Three: Friday, September 13, 2034

Welcome:  This week, we had the privilege of watching a video titled "Dear High School Self," created by a former student. This heartfelt message serves as a poignant reminder for our students to cherish their time in school, as it passes quickly. Many students found it relatable and impactful, highlighting the importance of reflection during their formative years.   This Past Week: Monday: I was out today for a few doctor's appointments and the students worked on a Wizer activity meant to help them differentiate between primary and secondary sources and recognize bias. The guest teacher had nothing but great things to say about the students!  Tuesday:  Today was the final day for the students to work on their Unit One Timelines (#10 on the Google Classroom). It was great to hear the students discussing the different ways to go about finding the information for the timeline. One student said, "ohhh, it's like a game and you have to put together the clues."  ...

Week Eight: October 14-18, 2024

Welcome:  Just like that, we are into the middle of October and more than halfway done the first quarter! The students started the annual fundraiser this past week and went wild over rubber ducks and possible trips to Citizens Bank Park. Next week marks the beginning of the Make a Difference Day collection--the students will be collecting canned goods, paper products, and personal hygiene products to donate to the Coventry Food Pantry to support local families.  I've been listening to a lot of Ryan Holiday and his Daily Stoic podcast lately and he has been on a moment mori kick. Momento mori  is the idea that everything must die, it although it sounds morbid, is a great reminder for us to live our lives to the fullest. This reminded me of one of my favorite clips from the movie Dead Poets Society-- we didn't have time to watch it on Friday so we'll start the week with it on Monday.  This Past Week:  Three Branches Mastery Grid: The students spent most of the wee...
