Week Seven: October 14, 2022

Welcome:

It's that time of year again--the annual fundraiser & Make a Difference Day drives are in full swing so please be sure to help support our school and community if you are able with either of these two drives. It's also time for this year's Spirit Week since next week is Homecoming! To the left is a schedule of what each spirit day will entail.

We were finally able to get back to a normal schedule of inspirational videos this week and I got to show another one of my favorites. This week's video is another TED Talk and it features Mark Bezos. While Mark may not be as rich and famous as his brother Jeff, he is certainly no less impressive! Mark talks about a valuable lesson he learned about helping others as a volunteer firefighter. I hope you watch and enjoy the video!

This Past Week:

  • Monday: Monday was my last day out--as I was traveling home from Wisconsin the students were working on finishing their ✅ #028-Principles of the Constitution assignment from Friday and then beginning to dive into their #030-Three Branches Mastery Grid.
  • Tuesday: Tuesday was all about making sure the students were understanding the work they did and the content we were discussing. We started class by doing a Google Form to let the students tell me where they were and how they were feeling about the assignments. They were then given time to complete the content videoes and notes in #030 today.
  • Wednesday: The goal for today was for the students to complete #031-Mastery Check once they finished the videos. Once the students scored a 19/19 on the check they were able to move on to complete an assignment called #032-Historical iPhones.
  • Thursday: The students started the day with a Quizlet Live--this was a fun way to get the working together to review some of the key content about the Three Branches that they will see again on the Civics Exam. Once
  • Friday: The students in my periods 1, 4, and 5 classes started working on #033-The Powers of the 3 Branches today while the students in periods 2 and 8 started working on their Infographics about the Three branches of government. This is the culminating product for the Mastery Grid and will be graded.

Next Week

Social Studies (1, 4 & 5)
Next week will see the students finishing up their Three Branches Mastery Grid and then moving on to discuss the Bill of Rights.  We'll discuss the work they did on #033 early in the week, plan out infographics and then have time to create their infographics for ✅ #034-Three Branches Infographic assignment early in the week. In addition to finishing up their Mastery Grid, we will continue to review for the Civics Exam that will be held on November 4.

Honor's Social Studies (2 &8)
The students will start the week by finishing their ✅ #034-Three Branches Infographic on Monday before moving on to the final piece of the Mastery Grid called "A More Just Middle School." The rest of this week the students will be looking into how they would go about restructuring our middle school so that it would mirror the principles of our Constitution. The students will have the option to work alone or in groups and will be asked to present their plans at the end of the week.

Week One (2023-24): Friday, September 1, 2023

Welcome:  Welcome to my blog to keep you up to date with what's going on in my social studies classes! I will try my best to remain consistent and up to date with this so if you notice me slipping please call me on it. The whirlwind of the first week of school has come to an end and it was a busy one for the students! We were able to meet with administrators, get the new lunch procedures down, take a team photo, and figure out the new schedule with homeroom at the start of the day!  Each week I enjoy taking some class time on Friday to show a video that is about more than just social studies. Sometimes the videos will be serious, and sometimes they will be funny, but they are always meant to get the students thinking about their own lives and those around them. This week I showed an oldie but a goodie--a segment from ESPN called Outside the Lines about two wrestlers who encounter and overcome a variety of obstacles. I hope you enjoy the video!  This Past Week:  Both my Social Studi

Week Two: Friday, September 8, 2023

Welcome:  Week two is in the books! The one thing I love about starting before Labor Day is that the students have truly come to appreciate the holiday weekend. I hope you all had a great weekend and a good second week back. This week we watched a video that was created by Jay Shetty all about the real meaning of success in life. I try my best to remember this as a teacher throughout the year.  This Past Week:  Tuesday: We'll be having quite a few discussions/debates in class this year and today the students experienced something called a Carousel Debate. This activity forces students to think of things from multiple perspectives to develop an argument. We discussed whether or not students should spend time studying history Wednesday: We continued learning about ways to develop an argument today when we investigated the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning method of argumentative writing. The students investigated whether or not they consider a hot dog to be a sandwich, compiled research onto

Week Three: Friday, September 15, 2023

Welcome:  Wow--what a week! This most likely goes without saying but I have never experienced anything like this in my 20 years of teaching. I'm extremely proud of the way this community came together and supported one another during the crazy events that unfolded this week. I realize that many of us are still trying to process what we endured as a community this week so if you feel there is anything I can do to help support your child please don't hesitate to reach out.  Now on to happier things--namely, the video I showed this week. The video that we watched in class is extra special for me because it was made by one of my former students. Juliana was a member of the graduating class of 2020 and she created this video as a project for one of her film classes in high school. I love showing this because it reminds the students to appreciate the time they have since it flies by-and this is much more meaningful coming from a 17-year-old instead of a 42-year-old teacher!  This Pa
